A 28-year-old Toronto man is facing charges after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 early Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a motor vehicle travelling eastbound on Highway 401 at a high rate of speed at around 2 a.m. Chatham OPP members set up observation for the vehicle near the Essex County/Chatham-Kent County border.

OPP say the vehicle was captured on radar two separate times, one in excess of 195 kilometers per hour. Officers maintained observation on the vehicle attempting to identify it or the driver while notifying additional units further east to observe for the vehicle.

The vehicle continued eastbound and near the 112 kilometer marker lost control, entered the south ditch and rolled over.

The lone occupant male driver was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police say Tomasz Szuflicki, age 28 of Toronto, was later arrested and released and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice, Chatham on May 31st charged with the following Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act Offences:

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Stunt Driving

His driver’s license has been suspended as per the regulations of the HTA
