House fire in Tilbury

Damages have been estimated at $285,000 after a fire broke out at a Tilbury home early Thursday.

Tilbury fire crews responded shortly after midnight to a working structure fire at 42 Massey Dr.

Fire officials say the occupant was awake and noticed the fire on the exterior of the home.  On arrival, fire crews found the exterior of the home next to the detached garage fully involved and the fire had extended into the attic. High winds at the time of the fire accelerated the spread of the fire from the exterior of the home into the attic area of the home. Additional firefighters where brought in from Merlin and Wheatley to assist with extinguishing the fire. An aerial ladder from Tilbury was used to knock down the bulk of the fire in the attic and to prevent the fire from extending to neighbouring homes. Crews remained at the scene for an extended period of time to ensure that deep seated fire in the attic was extinguished.

There were no injuries at the fire.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidents.
