Alleged drug traffickers arrested after being caught driving stolen van in Chatham

A 33-year-old Chatham man and a 24-year-old Chatham woman are facing charges after being caught driving a stolen van.

Shortly after 4 a.m. this morning, an officer on general patrol observed a van driving on Sandys Street in Chatham with plates that were not authorized for the vehicle.

The stopped the vehicle and learned that it was stolen.  Both the male driver and female passenger were arrested.

A search of the vehicle produced methamphetamine, a digital scale and can of bear spray that was tested and found to be in working order.

The man has been charged with three counts of driving while under suspension, driving while disqualified, possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle, two counts of failing to comply with his Prohibition Order, two counts of failing to comply with his Probation Order, three counts of failing to comply with conditions of his Recognizance of Bail and possession for the purposes of trafficking.

The woman has been charged with possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle and possession for the purposes of trafficking.

The stolen vehicle has been returned to the registered owner.

Both are in custody for a bail hearing.
