Charges laid in child abduction investigation

London police have arrested a 65-year-old man in connection with the abduction of a 4-year-old girl.

Police say the victim was outside with a sibling on Melsandra Avenue Sunday at around 9:15 a.m. when a man stopped, exited his vehicle, grabbed the girl and placed her in his car before driving away. A witness observed the incident and contacted police by calling 9-1-1. With the young girl in his car, a man drove a short distance through the neighbourhood. It was reported that the man touched the girl inappropriately while she was in his vehicle. When the car stopped, the young girl was able to open the door and run home.

Police say Lawrence Allen Thompson, 65, of London, was arrested Monday at around 6 p.m. and is charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:

  • Abduction of person under fourteen years of age;
  • Kidnapping;
  • Sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age; and
  • Sexual interference with person under 16 years of age.

The accused is in custody and was scheduled to appear in London court yesterday in relation to the charges.
