Woman dies after trying to stop vehicle theft in London

London police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred Thursday night.

Police say a stolen black Chevrolet pickup truck was observed operating in the area of Hamilton Road and Egerton Street at approximately 8:35 p.m.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., the vehicle was found abandoned in the area of Moffatt Avenue and Vancouver Street.

Shortly after, police received a 911 call to report that another vehicle, a grey 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck had been stolen from the driveway of a nearby residence.

As the suspect was fleeing in the Silverado, a 32-year-old woman attempted to intervene to prevent the theft. Police say the suspect continued driving and the woman sustained significant injuries as a result of being struck by the vehicle.

Police and EMS arrived and the female was transported to London Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced deceased.

The victim has been identified as Christina Smith, 32 years old, of London.

The Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was located unoccupied Friday morning in the area of Clarke Road and Trafalgar Street. The driver at the time of the collision remains outstanding.  Investigators have made progress in the investigation but are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information they have about the collision and the identity of the driver.
