Chatham man charged with assault

Yesterday afternoon, a man and his girlfriend were shopping.  A verbal argument began. It soon escalated into a physical altercation as the man placed the woman in a headlock and punched her in the head.  Witnesses intervened and called police.

The 25-year-old Chatham man was charged with assault.  He has been held in custody and is currently waiting for a bail hearing.
