Teens wake homeowner during break-in

Woman wakes up to find teens inside her home at 1 a.m.

Early this morning, shortly after midnight, teenagers forced their way into a residence on Sandys Street in Chatham and stole a set of car keys. They located the vehicle to which the keys belonged to in the parking lot and drove away in a green Ford Windstar van.

At 1 a.m. the suspects went to a complex on Wedgewood Avenue and began checking for unlocked doors. A resident heard them try his door and called police. In the meantime, the teens entered a residence in the complex through an unlocked door and stole a wallet. The homeowner was woke up and found the teens inside her residence with flashlights. They fled the scene on foot.

Police found two of the three teens within minutes. Both smelled of alcohol and knives were found on them both. The third teen was taken into custody about an hour later.

A 16-year-old Morpeth youth, 17-year-old Chatham youth and 18-year-old Morpeth teen have all been charged with, two counts of break and enter, two counts of possession of stolen goods, theft over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime and trespassing by night.

The 16-year-old Morpeth youth was additionally charged with possession of a weapon.

The 18-year-old Morpeth teen was additionally charged with possession of a weapon and three counts of failing to comply.

All three have been held in custody for a bail hearing.
