A rooming house in Chatham was shut down by authorities yesterday.

Declared unsafe for humans to inhabit, 47 Victoria Avenue was inspected yesterday just after 11 a.m. Two orders were issued under the building code of Ontario, an order to remedy an unsafe building and an order that prohibits the use of occupancy of an unsafe building.

Police say many infractions were found and hydro and gas were disconnected from the building. Tenants of the units have been relocated with help from the Victim Services Unit of the Chatham-Kent police.

Police say the owner of the property is aware of the orders and will be working towards remedying the problems. Efforts to contact the landlord were unsuccessful.
