The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) have executed a number of warrants on suspected Immigration and Refugee Protection Act violations by the Lev Tahor community in Chatham. Seven adults in the community are being sought on the warrants while 28 children are facing apprehension by Children’s Aid. The Chatham-Kent police were assisting CBSA officials in locating all the adults, going door-to-door in Spurgeon’s Villa. Chatham-Kent Children’s Services say that four of the seven wanted adults are the mother and father to 19 children.
Terrified children, clearly in distress, sat in a makeshift schoolroom as Lev Tahor adults wept openly. Peppering their talk with comparisons to the holocaust, adults members screamed “shame” when one man was arrested and placed into a waiting van. Some went as far as locking doors to prevent CAS workers from entering a small temple. The CAS were looking for six children inside the facility. This reporter was locked inside for a short time, as CAS and police stood outside the building. One adult male was screaming for police to “kill me now” behind the locked door.
One observer at the scene said police are seeking a warrant to enter the temple and school and apprehend at least some of the children. Unconfirmed reports say four adults have been arrested. (since updated, see story below)
