VIA Rail spokesperson Mylene Belanger says the train involved in the fatal accident this morning in Chatham has been released. One wheelchair-bound passenger is aboard and 80 others were bused to their destinations. Buses are headed to Glencoe, Woodstock, Brantford, Aldershot, Oakville and Toronto.
The eastbound train is not the only train affected. In total three trains have been pulled from service and the line is closed for the day between Windsor until London. VIA service will continue from Toronto to London. Train 71, scheduled to leave Windsor at 1:30 today has been cancelled and passengers are also being bused to their destination. Another train was to leave London heading westbound and those passengers are on buses already.
Belanger said VIA Rail extends their condolences to the family of the victim and she expressed VIA’s commitment to passenger safety.
