A 26-year-old Chatham man was arrested yesterday after police stopped him on Thames Street, suspecting him of theft.
On December 11 around 5 p.m. the man went to a business on St. Clair Street in Chatham. While inside the store, he placed two portable Mag lites valued at $40 into a duffel bag. The man left the store with the merchandise, without paying. The man was identified using store security video. Police attempted to find the man, however when unsuccessful, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Yesterday afternoon, officers found the man and he was arrested on the outstanding warrant. As the man was searched during his arrest, he was found to be wearing a stolen coat which still had a security device attached. In total, the man was found to have three stolen coats with a total value of over $300. He also had some marijuana on him.
He has been charged with theft under $5000, two counts of possession of stolen property and drug possession. He has been held in custody for a bail hearing.
