Chatham man arrested for six thefts from cars

s police 3Police have arrested a man for theft from vehicles in Chatham.

Yesterday morning police responded in the following areas as unlocked vehicles were entered sometime overnight:

  • Ellwood Street: two vehicles entered – Garmin GPS and book of blank cheques were stolen – value $200
  • Murray Street – one vehicle entered – Sony stereo system stolen – value $150
  • Prince Street N – two vehicles entered – two Garmin GPS’s, Tom Tom GPS and handheld speaker for a cell phone – value $700
  • Ellwood Street – one vehicle entered – Mark Bass Amp and box full of guitar pedals/cords – value $2300

Officers canvassed the areas and obtained suspect information and identified the man responsible. Some of the property was recovered.

Around 5:40 p.m. last night, police found the man on Grand Avenue East and he was arrested. The 23-year-old Chatham man has been charged with six counts of theft under $5000 and six counts of possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service are reminding residents that a vehicle with an unlocked door is an easy target for criminals. This holiday season protect yourself from being a victim: lock your doors, park in well-lit areas and never leave valuables in plain view.
