From his beginnings as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Hadfield became an engineer, fighter pilot, and test pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force, the US Air Force, and the US Navy, before being selected as a Canadian astronaut.
After being posted by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Hadfield held an array of impressive positions, including acting as the Chief CAPCOM in Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center for 25 Shuttle flights; being the Director of Operations at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia; and working as the Chief of Robotics and the Chief of International Space Station Operations for the NASA Astronaut Office.
Hadfield flew twice on the Space Shuttle, helping to build two different space stations through pioneering means of robotics and spacewalking. In 2010, he served as the commander of the NEEMO 14 mission, spending two weeks on the sea floor aboard the Aquarius underwater laboratory.
Also in 2010, NASA announced Hadfield would become the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station, leading Expedition 35 after its launch from Kazakhstan in December, 2012. Hadfield was in orbit aboard the ISS for five months before returning to Earth in May, 2013.
In his passionate and illuminating talks, Hadfield imparts the useful and practical lessons he’s learned throughout his remarkable career in the fields of leadership, teamwork, collaboration, science and technology, and motivates audiences to achieve dreams higher than the clouds.
