Wal-Mart security catches woman stealing

A woman has been arrested following two separate thefts in Chatham.

On July 24, a woman went the courthouse on Grand Avenue West in Chatham to meet with a social services worker. The woman and the social services worker in the main hallway of the court building. During the meeting, the woman stole a cell phone from the social services worker. The incident was later reported to police and was caught on security video. Officers attempted to locate the suspect but were unsuccessful and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

At about 8:15 p.m. last night, police were called to Wal-Mart on St. Clair Street in Chatham about a theft. A woman had been caught  and was being detained by store security for stealing items totaling over $500.

The woman was arrested and further investigation revealed that she had also stolen items from the Real Canadian Superstore. She was searched and an officer located a syringe containing Hydromorphone.

A 27-year-old Wallaceburg woman has been charged with three counts of theft under $5000, three counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and possession of a controlled substance.

She remains in police custody pending a bail hearing later today.
