Man arrested after stealing from several stores

According to  Chatham-Kent police, on August 16, a man went to the Wal-Mart in Wallaceburg, picked up a DVD player and a knapsack, and exited the store without making any attempting to pay for the items.

The suspect had been previously charged for stealing items from Wal-Mart and was bound by a probation order not to be in the store. Police attempted to locate him, but were unsuccessful and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

On Thursday night, the same man walked into the Shoppers Drug Mart in Wallaceburg and tied to steal two bottles of cologne. When an employee confronted the man, he returned one bottle, but left the store with the other bottle. Police attempted to locate him and a second warrant for his arrest was issued.

On Friday afternoon, the man walked into the No Frills grocery store in Wallaceburg, picked up a variety of items, and once again left the store without making any attempting to pay for them. The theft was captured on store security video and the suspect was identified.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. last night, an officer spotted the man who ran from police.  After a short foot chase, the man was found and arrested.

A 23-year-old Walpole Island man has been charged with breaching probation, three counts of theft under $5000, and three counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing later today.
