Chatham man arrested after meat heist fails

By Bill Zock

A Chatham man has been arrested after trying to steal $180 worth of meat from Sobeys on Park Avenue.
Around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, a Sobeys employee observed the man filling a bag with meat, then attempting to leave the store without paying for it. When he was asked to show his receipt he fumbled around looking in his pockets for a moment and then threw the bag of meat at the Sobeys employee and fled the store. He assaulted two store employees in his escape, pushing them out of the way. No injuries were reported.
The 31-year-old Chatham man was later arrested on St. George Street and is being held in custody for a bail hearing. He was charged with two counts of assault, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
