A 46-year-old Chatham man was arrested yesterday for shoplifting at a Queen Street grocery store. Just afer 3 p.m. he walked out of the store with eight packages of round steaks worth about $64. He left the store without making an effort to pay and police were contacted.
He fled on a bicycle and got as far as Patteson Avenue. When he was arrested he still had four packages of steaks. Police say they detected a strong odour of alcohol on the his breath. Later, police realized he was bound by conditions to not drink alcohol.
Police sources had no statement on the location of the other four packages of steaks.
He was charged with theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 and failing to comply.
