Speechless. Delirious. Cliff Roebuck was unable to comment Sunday night. 30 seconds after watching his daughter Brooklyn win The Next Star, Cliff and his wife Linda embraced supporters, and wore smiles that this interviewer cannot put into words. Nor could they. “What is there to say?”, said the proudest dad in the country. “Is that a story?”, asked the proudest mom. Throngs of supporters surrounded the family at Canada’s Wonderland, having just watched Brooklyn win
Cliff and Linda Roebuck have been the backbone for Brooklyn during her rise. Brooklyn credited her mother with selecting Brooklyn’s clothing during the early stages of YTV’s competition The Next Star. Dad has been instrumental in developing Brooklyn’s talents, from singing to songwriting. One of Brooklyn’s most endearing qualities is her humility, much of that can be traced to her upbringing.
Brooklyn’s father took the train with Brooklyn to Montreal to audition for The Next Star, and the month before he took Brooklyn to Nashville.
On Monday things had settled down a little for the Roebucks. Cliff spoke with the CKReview and said he wasn’t even sure where YTV had been taking Brooklyn all day. “I am sure we will find out”, said Roebuck as he prepared to have supper with his family. “YTV has given Brooklyn the Royal treatment all day, they have an SUV Escalade and have taken her around to different media outlets. We just got her back now.” Brooklyn appeared on YTV’s flagship show, The Zone and has commitments to YTV for the four days following her win before she returns to Chatham. When asked what his first words were to his daughter after the win, Cliff said, “I asked Brooklyn if she was ok.” The father was more concerned for how the young star was handling the moment, and made sure she was ok first. “Then we told her how proud of her we were. Then there were a lot of tears”, he laughed. “We all shed some and everyone was unbelievably happy. Brooklyn was also upset for the others who didn’t win.”
The mixed emotions for Brooklyn existed because the competitors all forged a close bond throughout the summer, but it did not exist among her supporters. Sheer glee flowed into the parking lot outside of Wonderland, as Chatham teens were singing and dancing to Brooklyn’s single in the autumn night. Chatham owned the place inside and out. Blaring from an SUV was Brooklyn’s single “The Way You See Me”, young people danced and sang with exuberance. Young teens leaving their seats at the end of the show who were introduced to the family were ecstatic to meet the family, shake a hand, be a part of a special night for everyone there.
On social media Brooklyn said, “WOW! I don’t know what to say. There are so many people to thank. I am still in ‘pinch me’ mode. I can’t believe all of this is happening. Missing Grace, Issy, Ryan, Amer and Darren. Definitely not the same without you guys. Wish we could have had one more day together.”
Brooklyn is the talk of the town, and the talk of the country. Her fans can look forward to two brand new song releases on Sony Music soon. Local stations are playing The Way I See You all day. Brooklyn’s high school has recognized the win on their neon sign. It will be some time before it all sinks in, the win is outstanding in scope and may take years to assess. History will be the judge of that. No wonder the family is at a loss for words.
