Jing Wang, Chairperson of the Chatham-Kent Chinese Association, introduced the year of the Dragon at the Evangel Community Church on Sandy St. yesterday. Wang described the year of the dragon as a year of power, strength and good luck. Children received red packets with candy inside at the door. Draws were held for prizes. Lanterns coloured the walls and hung from the ceiling. A Chinese folk dance troupe entertained the crowd of about 70, as guests enjoyed culinary treats from the far east. In China people mark the occasions for an entire week, and New Years acts to bond their society much like Christmas does in North America.
Mayor Randy Hope attended and addressed the audience. Hope gave some insight as to his recent trip to Asia, where the possibility exists of a Chinese University coming to Chatham-Kent.
The event is held annually to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Chinese calendar starts this year on January 23.
